Renewable Energy and the Energy Transition
The world is driven by fossil fuels like oil and gas. This has some negative repercussions: Rising energy prices due to decreasing deposits, dependence on unstable oil and gas producing regimes and global warming. It becomes clear, that a revolution in the way how we produce and use energy is necessary. Central to this energy transition are new technologies, which produce energy from renewable sources such as wind or sun. With Germany as an example, this clip shows what renewable energies are and how they work as well as what the concept of energy transition means. The clip is part of the WissensWerte Project of the german non-profit organization /e-politik.de/ eV By Jörn Barkemeyer and Jan Künzl Editorial Laura Hörath For more information about the WissensWerte project, please visit: www.edeos.org If you would like to stay in touch for further animated videos, like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com

Donald Sadoway: The missing link to renewable energy
www.ted.com What's the key to using alternative energy, like solar and wind? Storage -- so we can have power on tap even when the sun's not out and the wind's not blowing. In this accessible, inspiring talk, Donald Sadoway takes to the blackboard to show us the future of large-scale batteries that store renewable energy. As he says "We need to think about the problem differently. We need to think big. We need to think cheap."TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Renewable Energy in Germany 2012
Since the year 2000 Germany has developed from a pro-renewable energy country into a renewable energy powerhouse aiming for a complete transformation of its energy system. In Germany most of the renewable energy capacity is owned by individuals or community power projects. In this grassroots energy revolution millions of households, villages and even entire regions have already declared their partial or total energy independence by becoming independent power producers. This is driven by the concept of energy autonomy, of not being dependent on multinational corporations or energy sources that destroy the world future generations have to life in. It was made possible by policy frameworks that enabled & encouraged people to invest in renewable energy sources and enforced market access by removing obstacles that prevent renewable energy projects around the world to this very day. During the first half of the year solar power alone has produced more than 4% of the total power demand in Germany. While the share was rather small with about 1% in January it grew to more than 10% in May as the days got longer and warmer. Each kWh from solar power has been produced during peak-load hours, replacing coal, gas or oil-fired power stations. Between January and June the combined power production of wind & solar energy was 5.5-7.5 TWh which represents 16-19% of the total power production every month. While wind power was the dominant source of variable renewable energy sources during ...

Scott Burger Greentech Media
One of the key take-a-ways from a vist to Abu Dhabi is how seriously the emirate is taking solar (and other renewable) energy. It's common sense really - take advantage of oil and gas while they last and build tomorrow's infrastructure today. The UAE has a goal to produce 7% of their energy from renewables by 2020 - that's far ahead of the United States if you take away hydroelectric. Why would a country as rich in natural gas and oil bother to invest in solar? I had a quick chat with Greentech Media's Scott Burger on why a country like the UAE would be taking such a proactive stance on renewable energy and what the United States stands to learn from their example.

Germans pay the price for renewable energy
It has been over a year since German Chancellor Angela Merkel set the goal of a nuclear-free future for Germany by 2022. The widespread adoption of renewable energy, however, has left consumers bearing the burden of the changes. Some bills in Germany could even go up by 47 percent. Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports from Berlin.

euronews hi-tech - Morocco makes renewable energy progress while the sun shines
www.euronews.com With over 300 days of sunshine per year, Ain Beni Mathar in Morocco, near the border with Algeria, was the perfect site to build a thermal and solar hybrid plant. The first of its kind in Africa, Ain Beni Mathar is a real opportunity for Morocco to explore alternative sources. The country suffers greatly from its energy dependence, importing 97% of its coal and oil energy needs. The National Office of Energy and the African Development Bank have opened the doors of the plant to euronews. On a guided tour, the company's Chief Operating Officer Nour Eddine Fetian told us: "The principle is that the plant consists of two lines, two gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine and lines for production and energy discharge. So steam is produced by two sources: there is natural gas, under the normal combined cycle, and the steam produced by the solar field. Both vapours converge towards the steam turbine and are integrated at the same time to produce electric power. The total output of the power plant is 472 megawatts, 20MW of which is solar, allowing it to satisfy about 10% of the country's energy demand. Ain Beni Mathar is supplied with natural gas by the Maghreb / Europe pipeline. Fetian Nour Eddine, the director of the Beni Mathar power plant also spoke about the intelligent energy recovery system: "So the combined cycle recovers energy from the exhaust gases to produce steam. Basically, after bring emitted, the exhaust gas enters a ...

Mighty Moon: Renewables Revisited
Forget solar power, this month check out the only kind of energy sourced from the moon. Tidal power plants have an interesting history, but is there a future for this alternative source of renewable energy? Super durable concrete and floating construction methods have made unusual hydroelectricity plants economically feasible, but a new turbine is poised to carry them into the 21st century. Wave energy converters also capture the motion of the ocean and could boost electricity production at future tidal barrages threefold. And engineers are hard at work just outside of Moscow on a new pumped storage plant that harnesses the natural power of gravity for an environmentally friendly way to balance energy demand. Renewed Energy Song
Here is a song I created to help my 6th grade students study. I hope you enjoy. So what we use fuels It's what people need We're just having fun We don't care who sees But these fuels will go out Supplies are limited Need to use renewed energy Uh, uh, uh Oil, gas, and coal are used up Forming from plants remains of animals Built up in rock in layers Keep it trapped below We dig down for it Chemical energy released you burn on it People use fuels for cooking, electricity, lighting, cars, and heating And use them up but they're limited Supplies down demand so great we all need to find a better way Yeah, uh you know what? Need fuels to use again Sun is on my face Solar panels in place Catching solar rays Biogas from rotting waste Geothermal heat energy, volcanic areas blowing all day Wind turbines turning away Water is safe flowing away Hydroelectric power station Renewable sources only used about 5% So what we use fuels It's what people need We're just having fun We don't care who sees But these fuels will go out Supplies are limited Need to use renewed energy Reservoir's flowin' there Hydroelectric power plant Spinning turbine activates generators A large dam Ocean's everywhere we going thermal energy Mechanical is up when tides and waves come And then there's hydrogen One proton one electron Simple but no gas around Always combination From the ground up organic hydrocarbons Separated reforming no pollution Fuel cells combining the two gasses really Hydrogen and oxygen ...
